18 months ago Yate RFC beat us by 70 points. So knowing that the visitors 1st game had been cancelled,things didn't look good for Broad Plains 2nd XV. Then to make matters worse, With 4 cry offs that morning meant Plain only had the bare 15!
Yate arrived with 20+ players, and with no ref,the away team kindly got one of their people to ref.
The game kicked off with Plain receiving,with veteran Tony Andres catching and running with the ball as he was to do all day into the a blockade of defenders.with the resulting scrum,Plain were up against it with an inexperienced front row of Jordan Perkins and Joe Hunt(who was playing out of position,and doing us a favour) together with old boy Kevin Chappell. Things didn't look good!
But what a scrum.The forwards were solid from beginning to the end. Even pushing the away team off their own ball on several occasions and also dominating the lineouts,with Alex Palmer and Welsh Aaron taking ball after ball. But even with that dominance,it was Yate who would take the lead with 2 tries(both converted) against the run of play. Unfortunately for The visitors,that would be their only points.
With a couple of positional changes(Paul Dennyto fly half,Owen Summerhayes to outside centre) the home side began an onslaught that was a privilege to be a part of. The forwards outplayed,out muscled and out ran their counterparts into submission. The likes of Brad Alford 19yrs( playing his first game since 2016)along with Zak Slocombe never stopped for 80 minutes. With the whole team working in tandem with one another scoring 74 points with no reply.not even the presence of a ex Welsh rugby league player in Yates back line could help them.
The halve backs of Paul Morgan and Denny controlled the back line with pin point passes to Capt Robin Tremlett and Owen summerhayes who carved the opposing back line to pieces scoring five tries between them. And with the speedsters of Jon Poles and Stu Pares on the wings ,Yate with ex Broad Plainers,Andy Forbes and Callum Monks didn't stand a chance
