No time for a long report this week folks. Suffice to say the lads matched the intensity of their performance at Pembroke Dock last week, to overcome a physical and fired up Southmead squad. A few early fumbles allowed the home lads to pile on the pressure, but Plain excelled in defence and managed to get out of jail on a couple of occasions, before good offloading and excellent support pushed play down to the other end. In an edgy opening spell, it was 12 minutes before Luke S broke the deadlock, then strong runs and scores by Owen and Jack R opened up a significant lead by minute 21. Plain were caught on the hop, predictably by Mead's talented dinky winger, to get them back into the game, however with virtually the last play Owen crossed to stretch the Bemmy Boys lead to 17 points. 7-24 at the turnaround.
Complacency can be dangerous against this Southmead team - we saw at our last meeting how a big lead could be quickly whittled down if the lads lost focus. Credit then to the south Bristol outfit, who weathered some more early pressure from the Mead before Luke B got away to run over the whitewash, Owen's successful conversion cranking the score up to 7-30. And that was how it stayed for the rest of an exciting ding-dong game, until the final minute when a mix up in the scrum 10 metres out allowed the home lads to swing wide and run in a consolation score, unconverted. Final score 12-31.
So, great to finish the 15-a-side season with a big win against strong opposition, to retain the Freddy Hussey Trophy. An excellent team performance, big tackles all round, strong support running, and the rucking really is getting better, pretty impressive in many places today. Joint Man of the Match went to the 2 Kais, whose intensity was an example to the rest of the team. Well done lads, and thanks to both sides for a cracking game, typical of this fixture, and a credit to Freddy's memory.
